Day 1
Arrival in Barcelona

Meet your friendly host and start exploring Barcelona’s neighborhoods and culture.

Day 1
Weeks 1–4:
Earn Your CELTA (TEFL)

Dive into the 4-week Cambridge CELTA course, Monday to Friday (usually 10:00–18:00). It’s hands-on, practical, and designed to transform you into a confident, skilled English teacher. You’ll teach real students from week one, receive expert feedback, and gain a qualification respected worldwide.

Recharge & Explore

You deserve it! Take some time out to explore Barcelona, relax at the beach or hang out with your classmates. 

You’ll be able to meet our careers advisor again to polish your CV and start planning your next steps as an English as a foreign language teacher.

Week 6
Specialised Training Week

In this week, you’ll be diving in deep! Start your training in our centre with an Oxford TEFL expert young learner teacher (10 hours in total, Monday to Friday). The training will cover everything you need to know about teaching classes for early childhood (ages 3-5), young learners (ages 6 - 11, and tweens and teenagers (12-15). This includes specialised skills for both the online and in-centre classroom – ideal for those who may want to combine both in the future to optimise their earning potential!

In this week, you will also observe three young learner classes, delivered by one of our expert young learner teachers in our school. By the end of this week, you will feel ready to jump into any young learner classroom with confidence.

Week 6
Week 7
Teaching Experience Week

Start your teaching practice. You will be a teaching assistant either in Oxford House (our language school, the same location where you will also take the CELTA course) or in a local school. You will always be accompanied by one of our teachers and you will be observing, assisting the teacher in the classroom or teaching parts of the lesson. Your students will be young learners between the ages of 6 and 15 years old and mostly Spanish. This is an excellent opportunity to observe an experienced young learner teacher and also assist and teach the lessons. After each class you will receive feedback on the lesson and tips for the next class.

The exact schedule will depend on availability and time of year but will be a total of 5 hours of teaching practice in total (Monday to Friday).

At the end of this week, you will submit your reflective task and attend an end-of-course session with your tutor to share your learnings from the teaching practice week. You will then receive feedback on the task and your Oxford TEFL certificate in Teaching Young Learners.

Week 7
Week 8 and beyond:
Start Teaching, Earning, and Living Your Dream

Whether you choose to stay in Barcelona or work abroad, you’ll have gained the CELTA certification (highly sought after by employers) and also a certification to teach young learners, opening up even more teaching opportunities worldwide. Where will you go?

CELTA (TEFL) + Kids Program

What are the entry requirements for the CELTA (TEFL) & Kids Program?

To join this program, you need to be accepted onto the CELTA course in Barcelona. You must:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Be educated to the standard required for entry into higher education (e.g., “A-levels” in the UK, a high school diploma in the US/Canada).
  • Be in good enough health to deal with the demands of an intensive training course.
  • Demonstrate your ability to cope with the academic demands of the course (assessed via the application process).
  • Have a C1.2 (high C1) or C2 level of English.
What is the CELTA course?

The Cambridge CELTA certification is a “TEFL” course and is preferred by around 75% of TEFL employers worldwide. You only need to check TEFL job ads to see for yourself that teachers with this certification are not only at the front of the queue for the best TEFL teaching positions, but they are also commonly paid a better teaching rate per hour. The CELTA certification is recognised everywhere. So, you can be sure that the course fee is worth every cent. This is an investment in your future self – wherever you choose to go in the world.

What is the school in Barcelona like?

Oxford TEFL in Barcelona is located in the centre of the city, just a 2 minute walk from the famous Passeig de Gracia. We are the largest teacher training centre and language school in Barcelona with fantastic facilities to study and enjoy. Facilities include a large garden, resource library, kitchen, communal area and 26 classrooms. Hundreds of adults and children learn English or Spanish in our school every year! You will take both your CELTA & Kids extension course here.

What will I do during the one week of Kids English training?

This training will be delivered by one (or more) of our young learner teachers. Each session will focus on practical skills and resources for teaching children and teenagers in different contexts. You will study for 10 hours in total, Monday to Friday and the following topics will be covered.

  • Essential skills for the Young Learner teacher
  • Classroom management
  • Creating optimal conditions for learning
  • Lesson planning and using course books
  • Presenting and practicing language
  • Teaching activities & resources
  • Storytelling, games & activities

On the last day of this week-long training, you will be able to resolve any doubts you have about your teaching practice week and your tutor who will also share a reflective task with you for submission in week 7.

🔸Can I do the training in teaching Kids as a standalone program?🔸

Yes. If you would like to participate in the training just for teaching kids English, you can do just that. In this case, the program would include:

  • 1-week of training with an expert young learners teacher (learn everything you need to know before your teaching practice)
  • 3 observations of real Oxford TEFL young learner English classes (watch the experts in action)
  • 1-week of teaching practice (as a teaching assistant) with young learners in a real school (teach students, receive support, get feedback)

Choose the dates which suit you from those displayed in the dates section above (“TYL = Teaching Young Learners (Kids)”.

Program fee: €800 if paid within 7 days of your Place Offer (€850 after).

To be considered for the Teaching Kids program, you would need to:

  • Have a prior qualification in teaching English as a foreign language (CELTA / TEFL)
  • Be able to travel to Barcelona to participate in the program
  • Be able to make full payment for the program at least 14 days prior to the first day of the course.
Do I need a visa to enrol in the CELTA (TEFL) & Kids English Program?

We welcome applications for the CELTA (TEFL) & Kids program from citizens of every country –we want this program to be accessible to as many aspiring teachers as possible! If you are from within the European Union, you do not need a visa to enrol in this program in Barcelona. If you are from outside the European Union, you may need a Schengen Visa to study with us in Barcelona. Many countries (such as the USA, Canada and Australia) do not need to apply for a visa in advance (you would attend the program on your tourist visa which is stamped on your passport on arrival in Spain). Our in-house Visa Support Officer will advise you on this.

Is accommodation in Barcelona included in this program?

Your have the option of including hosted accommodation or not. Simply select “yes” or “no” on the application form. If you do want to use our accommodation service, we will provide a total of 64 nights (2 months) of hosted accommodation in Barcelona. Read more about the accommodation service.
