Pre-TEFL Course

Online TEFL Starter

Online TEFL Starter course

The Online TEFL Starter course is a practical 45-hour online course providing an introduction to teaching English as a foreign language.

Who is this course for?

This course has been designed for those looking for an introduction or a taster of teaching English as a foreign language. It is ideal for you if:

  • You are looking for a practical and flexible online course with tutor support to help you prepare for an online or face-to-face TEFL course (eg. CELTA or Trinity CertTESOL)
  • You are looking for a basic introduction to teaching English as a foreign language and you have a minimum B2 level of English.
  • You would like a certificate from an established ELT organization accrediting your achievements

What will you learn?

This course covers a range of topics related to teaching English as a foreign language, including:

  • The basic features of English grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation
  • How to present and practise language
  • How to use teaching materials, including course books and online materials
  • How to use authentic materials such as films TV shows and songs in the classroom
  • The different roles a teacher can take in the classroom
  • How to manage and organize a class face to face and online
  • How to understand different types of learner and styles of learning
  • How to deal with different teaching contexts, including teaching different age groups and group sizes
  • How to assess someone’s level of English in the four skills
  • How to assess your students’ needs
  • How to motivate students inside and outside the classroom
  • How to continue to improve your teaching after the course

How will the course work?

The course content is practical and includes 45 hours of our own content and carefully curated content from experts in the field of ELT. It is divided into 3 modules of around 15 hours each.

You can choose to complete the course in 3 weeks (studying 15 hours approximately per week) or 6 weeks (7.5 hours per week). During this time, you will work on a variety of tasks including reading, watching videos, writing assignments and discussing ideas with your tutor in a forum.

At the end of each module you will have a live videoconference session with a tutor (40 minutes approximately each). You can discuss the topics relating to the course, practice teaching techniques with your tutor and receive feedback. You can arrange the time and day of this tutorial directly with your tutor. We are very accustomed to training teachers all over the world and we will always be able to schedule your online tutorial at a convenient time for you.

As this is a one-to-one course, we are able to provide you with personalized attention. If you would like to enroll as a group of friends or colleagues and complete the course together we can also arrange this.

In order to pass the course and receive your Oxford TEFL certificate, you will need to participate fully and complete the tasks to a satisfactory standard.

What will you be able to do after the course?

  • If you are already teaching, you will be able to improve your skills. You will feel more confident about what you are doing and how you can continue to develop.
  • If you haven’t taught before, you will be able to apply for teaching posts with a credential on your resume/CV that demonstrates you have done some training as a teacher. (Please note, this course is an introduction. If you want a full teaching qualification you need to do a CELTA course)
  • Although completion of the Online TEFL Starter course does not guarantee acceptance onto the CELTA course, you will have a much better understanding of teaching English as a foreign language and what skills would be needed to pass the CELTA course successfully.
