Before we dive into the updates, let’s clear up the jargon. The Trinity College London Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (DipTESOL) is a Level 7 qualification. In academic terms, that is the same level as a Master’s degree.  

While your initial certificate (Level 5) taught you how to teach a lesson, the Diploma teaches you the why behind the how. It’s the difference between following a recipe and being the chef who writes the cookbook. It’s internationally recognized, equivalent in status to the Cambridge Delta and accepted by employers worldwide.

Breaking Down the Four Assessment Units: What’s New? 

The course is divided into four distinct units. Each one is designed to help you build your knowledge on teaching theory and how it relates to practice. Here is how they work under the new structure: 

Unit 1: Language, Teaching, and Learning 

This is the theoretical foundation of the course. It covers the “meat” of ELT: grammar, lexis, discourse, and learning theory. 

• The Assessment: You write an essay (submitted online) and then participate in an online pre-assessment discussion.  

• The Update: You no longer need to complete a three-hour, handwritten exam in a test centre. Trinity has replaced it with a remotely assessed, open-book essay and a live discussion, allowing you to use digital tools, allowing you to do in-depth research into topics that are pertinent to your teaching context 

• The Benefit: You get to showcase your actual thinking and research skills without the pressure of a ticking clock.  

Unit 2: The Coursework Portfolio 

This unit is about Action Research. It’s spread over three months and is arguably the most practical part of the theory.  

• The Assessment: You complete three research projects. These involve observing other experienced teachers, reflecting on your own teaching habits, and collecting data on your students’ progress.  

• The Update: You no longer have to complete separate, independent research projects. The new portfolio lets you choose one single, unified topic tailored directly to your own current teaching context so all your research connects together. 

• The Benefit: You save time by working on one meaningful project instead of multiple separate assignments. We know it is crucial to keep your coursework highly relevant so you can solve real problems in your classroom while earning your qualification. 

Unit 3: The Phonology Interview 

Phonology is the hidden hurdle for many teachers. We all know how to teach “cat” vs “cut,” but how do we handle the mechanics of connected speech or intonation? 

• The Assessment: A 30-minute interview with a Trinity examiner. You give a short presentation on a pronunciation activity you’ve designed, analyse a phonemic transcription, and discuss theory.  

• The Update: You no longer just analyse random audio clips or focus purely on abstract theory. The new assessment requires you to record, transcribe, and analyse the actual phonological features of your own language used during your real lessons. 

• The Benefit: You gain deep, practical awareness of how you actually sound and communicate when teaching. We know it is crucial to analyse your own speech patterns so you can immediately improve your classroom instructions and better model pronunciation for your students. 

Unit 4: Assessed Teaching Practice 

This is where the rubber meets the road. It’s the section where you demonstrate that you can apply all that Level 7 theory in a real (or virtual) classroom. 

• The Assessment: Four one-hour assessed lessons. Each lesson includes a pre-lesson discussion and a 20-minute post-lesson discussion with the examiner.  

• The Update: You no longer face a long series of isolated, high-stress lesson observations. The number of formal observations has been reduced, and your final practical exam now features a collaborative, joint observation conducted by both your course tutor and a Trinity examiner. 

• The Benefit: The number of assessed lessons has been reduced from five to four. Teaching fewer lessons allows the candidate to spend more time on their lesson plans and takes away the time pressure of teaching five assessed lessons in a short period of time.
