The old city (“El Casco Antiguo”) is an amazing place to discover.Cobbled streets, landscaped plazas, amazing architecture, ruins and monuments are all around. Distances are short and covered by foot or on a bicycle. Although the streets follow a labyrinth design to prevent the wind from entering the old town, a friendly and welcoming feeling prevails at all times and one is always discovering a new corner. Cadiz enjoys one of the mildest climates in Europe with a year-round average temperature of 18ºC – 20ºC on the coast and a yearly average of over 300 days of sunshine. While temperatures soar inland during the summer months, Cadiz always remains temperate.
The city is large enough to have plenty going on but retains the intimate feel of a small and friendly town on the beach. Its people are proud of their openness, warmth and love of life. On top of this, it’s attractions are not limited to the sun-lover.
The “RutadelTapeo” is an excellent way to sample the gastronomical array of food that Cadiz has to offer. This is a local competition whereby a number of restaurants and bars compete for the title of “Best Tapas”, “Most Original Dish” and “Top restaurant” to be voted for by customers. This helps Cadiz maintain an interesting culinary scene year round!
Cadiz is one of the places in the South of Spain, Andalucia, that continues to host and develop Flamenco as one of its main artistic expressions. Despite being central to the local culture, Flamenco isnot the only type of music to be found. Live music of all genres can be found on a weekly basis in bars. For example, “Cambalache” suppliesan interesting jazz scene. The Cadiz Jazz Festival is becoming one of the most interesting annual events in terms of music and both the week-long February Carnival and Easter celebration are world renowned.
Cadiz is also ideally situated to explore all of the South of Spain. Jerez de la Frontera (which has an international airport), the cliff-top town of Arcos de la Frontera and the beautiful Moorish town of Vejer de la Frontera are all a short hour away from Cadiz. Along the coast are unspoiled and often wild beaches of fine-white sand and towns such as the nearby Tarifa, which is quickly becoming a favourite for board, wind and kite surfers. And if that is not enough, both Portugal and Morocco are virtually on your doorstep!
