Start the CELTA course running by giving yourself a head start on English grammar!

Who is this English Grammar Preparation course for?

The English Grammar Preparation course is designed for people who want to teach English as a foreign or second language and have little or no knowledge of how English grammar works, how it is described and how you might teach it to someone who doesn’t speak English. It is ideal for you if:

  • You have little or no idea about grammar terminology, parts of speech or the English tense system.
  • You want a flexible online course with tutor support and feedback, and with plenty of focus on practical application of grammar knowledge (not just the theory that you can find on Chat GPT!).
  • You are planning to complete a CELTA course or similar initial qualification for language teaching and need to brush up on your English grammar before you start

What will you learn?

The English Grammar Preparation course covers a range of topics related to English grammar, including:

  • Familiarity with terminology and the concepts relating to the main elements of English grammar:
    • Parts of Speech
    • Verb Tenses
    • Comparatives and Superlatives
    • Modals
    • Passive Voice
    • Conditionals
    • Reported Speech
    • Articles
    • Verb patterns: Gerunds and Infinitives
  • How to present and practise grammar with language learners
  • How grammar is used in English language teaching materials such as course books and online materials

How will the English Grammar Preparation course work?

The content of the English Grammar Preparation Course is practical and includes reading and video observation tasks, a portfolio and three 30-minute one-to-one live tutorials with your tutor.

During your live tutorials you will be able to ask questions, and your tutor will test your knowledge and help you develop your understanding of grammar. We are very accustomed to training teachers all over the world and we will always be able to schedule your online tutorial at a convenient time for you.

To pass the English Grammar Preparation course and receive your Oxford TEFL digital certificate, you will need to participate fully and complete the tasks to a satisfactory standard.

What will you be able to do after the course?

  • Understand and explain English grammar with greater confidence.
  • Be prepared for a full CELTA training course with a solid basis of grammar knowledge.
  • Understand the challenges English students face when learning English grammar.

Full English Grammar Preparation course outline

You can take the course over 1 week (do the full 15 hours intensively, like a grammar bootcamp!) or over 3 weeks (around 5 study hours per week, ideal if you have other commitments).

It is divided into three modules and each module has three units. Each unit consists of:

  1. Watch and Read: You will watch a video and read an article to explain the basics of the grammar point.
  2. Be the Student: You will put yourself in the shoes of your learners and experience the grammar point from their point of view. This will help you see possible difficulties and give you greater empathy for your students.
  3. Be the Teacher: You will be introduced to a variety of teaching materials and resources to use in class with your learners.

This format makes the course highly practical and reflects the type of training and reflection you will be doing on the CELTA course (great preparation if you want to give yourself the best chance of being accepted onto a CELTA, and passing the course successfully!)
