10.30 – 11.30 The Unmapped Challenges of Teaching Anglo-American Writing Norms to Foreign Learners, Sarka Cisarova, Oxford TEFL Teacher Trainer
This workshop will reveal important insights into the often overlooked challenges that teachers and learners face when dealing with writing for exam or publication purposes. Drawing on the research in contrastive rhetoric (CR), the workshop will outline the key cultural differences between writing in English and other world languages (French, German and Czech) and what they entail for choosing effective methods, activities and feedback. Combining lecture format with hands-on activities, the workshop will invite teachers to analyse authentic students’ texts and discuss process-oriented approaches and activities for developing learners’ writing skills, managing the writing process and working with teacher and peer feedback.
12.00 – 12.50 Assessments: Informing instruction through assessment, Steve Starkweather, Oxford TEFL Young Learner Teacher Trainer
In modern education, accountability is an important aspect of a teacher’s job description and the best way to determine accountability is to focus on student assessments. This course will provide background on how to effectively create formative and summative assessments that show how well the students are learning material. In order to create effective assessments teachers should be aware of:
- Key principles when making assessments.
- Using Bloom’s taxonomy to write achievable and measurable objectives.
- Processes that allow us to make learning visible, such as graphic organizers.
- Strategies to reduce anxiety in the classroom.
Incorporating different assessment practices in the classroom will give teachers and students a clearer understanding of how well they are learning the material and identify areas that need improvement.
These workshops get full, so we recommend signing up early via the form below to help ensure you can be included in the list of participants.
