Blended CELTA course at Oxford TEFL Barcelona

If you have a busy schedule and you are unable to attend a 4-week intensive course, our online (blended) CELTA course could be for you. This 15-week course has been designed to be flexible and still offer the same high-quality training as the full-time CELTA course. We provide all the support you need online and offline in order to successfully obtain your Cambridge CELTA certificate. This course is suitable for native and non-native speakers (minimum C1.2 level). On successful completion of this course, you will be a fully-qualified EFL teacher and able to apply for teaching jobs inside and outside of Spain.

Study online via the Cambridge online learning platform and attend our modern school in central Barcelona on Saturdays for teaching practice.

The format

As a participant of this course, you will complete online work with the support from a tutor and attend our school in Barcelona on Saturdays.

You can expect to spend a minimum of five hours a week studying online. You will complete interactive tasks, participate in guided video observation and contribute to the forum discussions. Your tutor will also join you in the forum discussions and provide online tutorials. You can revisit and revise from the materials throughout the course. One of the great things about this is that you can complete the work in a place and at a time which suits you.

You can complete the online work on a day and time which suits you. Each week you will work through a module (around 5 hours). On Saturdays you will come to our school. In the first week you will observe a tutor. Then you will teach one 45-minute class on each teaching practice day and observe your peers teaching three 45-minute classes.

The schedule on Saturdays will be:

The Cambridge CELTA course in Barcelona

Some prior knowledge of English grammar is beneficial and will increase your chances of being accepted onto the course and passing your assessments.

We will provide you with a free 20-hour pre-course task which will help you familiarise yourself with English grammar and get prepared for the course.

During the course, you will also learn more about English grammar. We believe in learning through involvement and in your grammar and language awareness sessions you will mostly experience a workshop approach, where your tutor acts as a “facilitator/animator” rather than as a lecturer.

The practical nature of the course is emphasized from the very beginning. You will be in small groups (4 or 5 trainees with one tutor) and you will begin teaching real adult students in the first week. After each class you teach, there will be a feedback session with your tutor and fellow trainees followed by lesson planning help for your next lessons. For our trainees, this is usually the most fun part of the course!

We provide group and individual lesson planning support throughout the course. You will also observe some of our tutors so that you can see first-hand how experienced teachers plan and deliver classes, providing further insights into lesson planning, staging and management. The feedback that we provide at the end of each lesson will enable you to keep building on your teaching skills and improve your lessons day by day.

All of our classrooms are equipped with modern technology and we encourage the use of YouTube, interactive online teaching platforms (Kahoot, Quizlet etc) and social media alongside the use of books and other more traditional activities. The school has a wide variety of resources available to you to use to help create engaging classes for your students.

You will learn a variety of teaching methodologies to use with your students during the course and after you graduate. We provide workshops, tutorials and video content as well as reading materials to help you understand and use these techniques.

It is not necessary to have a degree, to be a native speaker of English, to be able to speak a foreign language, or to have any previous teaching experience. To be considered for this course, you will need to:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Demonstrate your ability to cope with the academic demands of the course eg. a university degree (in progress or finished) or work experience.
  • Have good enough health to deal with the demands of an intensive course of training, travel and working abroad.

Because the CELTA course involves teaching learners with a B2/C1 level of English, we can only accept applicants with a C1.2 level of English or higher. Your English language will be assessed throughout the application process.

Graduates of our CELTA courses typically go on to work in private language schools, teaching adult or young learner students around the world. Some also go on to teach students online or work for language training agencies. One of the great things about the CELTA qualification is that once you have it, you can work anywhere (visa permitting).

During the course, you will meet our careers advisor who will provide a session on finding work after your course. You will be given expert advice on preparing your CV which highlights your background, education, experience and skills. You will be able to meet our careers advisor as many times as you like during and after the course. See our careers service page for more information.

First, complete the application form. We will check your application and get in touch within one working day to send you a pre-interview task (grammar and language awareness) .

Then, send us your pre-interview task and select the day and time of your online interview.

During the online interview we will ask you about the pre-interview task, your background and reasons for wanting to take the course. We will make sure that the course is a good fit for you and vice versa.

If accepted, you will receive a full place offer and information about how to secure your place on the course via email.

The Online CELTA is assessed and moderated using the same criteria as the intensive 4-week face-to-face course and leads to exactly the same qualification. The University of Cambridge requires candidates on all CELTA courses teach a total of six hours during the course. This teaching is observed and assessed by course tutors and is divided into 8-10 separate classes for each candidate.

The tutors

Our team of trainers are experts in their field and qualified to a minimum of DELTA / DipTESOL level, which means they are qualified to train teachers of English. They offer support every step of the way throughout your course and are very active in the TEFL industry.
