Testimonials

"I loved the ideas that Claire came up with, the songs and games that she introduced were very useful. They are tried and tested, and I therefore have confidence that in my classes they will work. I also enjoyed Jane's sessions on building a teaching sequence and the comparison of different approaches. The course was fun and it was good to brush up on ideas and get some new ones. "

Teaching Young Learners Extension Course April 7th- 9th

"When I arrived for my first day at a new job, I greeted two boys -- who I expected to be at an elementary level -- but they only gave me blank stares. They were, in fact, very true beginners. They froze. I froze. And then I remembered one of the many things I learned in Claire's Young Learners Course: the importance of building a comfortable, conducive learning environment before you can expect children to produce language. I ditched my lesson plan and instead, drew a stick figure on the board. I Iabeled its arm. I silently handed the marker to one of the boys, who identified the head. Another came up to the board and identified the eyes. We continued, sometimes writing the word in L1 before working out the L2 translation together. Sixty minutes later, we were playing "Simon Says," and they were yelling out the new body vocabulary they just learned. Without Claire's class, though, I would have drowned in those first few moments of silence. THANK YOU!"

Course Overview

This course is for newly qualified and experienced teachers who have limited or no experience teaching English as a foreign language to young learners. Participants gain knowledge and skills in teaching children aged 6-12 years old. The course is 3 weeks on-line.

Course content

The course is made up of the following elements:

Input sessions - Link theory to practice and focus on areas which are essential for teachers to know before stepping into the classroom.

Tasks - Give participants the opportunity to develop practical skills which every Young Learner teacher needs to make classes effective and fun.

In addition, we also offer the following:

Observation: Participants are invited to observe their tutors teaching young learners.

Online support: Tutors can be contacted up to 6 months after the course should you need further advice about teaching or professional development as well as regular updates of job opportunities.

Why a TYL Course?

In the last ten years, the TEFL industry has seen an extraordinary increase in the number of children learning English as a foreign language in both in state systems and in private language schools. Employers now recognise that further training is an essential requirement for any teacher wishing to enter the YL classroom successfully and, in response to this need, OxfordTEFL has created a 3-week on-line course to prepare teachers for the demands of the YL classroom and help them stand out from the crowd when applying for teaching positions.

What is an on-line course like?

You will be with a fixed group of course partIcipants, a team of tutors will lead and support you in tasks and you will work both individually and in teams. The VLE includes forums, links, tasks and opportunities to communicate with tutors and other course partIcipants.
We use modules which run for a week. On-line learning is "asynchronist" , people participate at different times.

About on-line learning with OxfordTEFL

We believe that distance learning works best when it captures, as far as possible, the dynamics of face-to-face learning, even when that means less flexibility (see below). A sense of isolation can cause people to drop out of distance learning courses. Our Distance/On-line Teaching Young Learners courses have the following key features, which ensure motivation remains high:

Variety of ways of learning
Through our virtual learning environment you will use the internet to communicate with tutors and fellow course members, access materials and complete learning tasks.

Interaction
Our virtual learning environment (VLE) allows you to communicate individually and collectively with tutors and other course members, both for social and study purposes. You will be assigned individual, group and pair tasks, as in a "real" classroom with the difference that, instead of all working at the same time (synchronised) you can log on and off and contribute at times which are convenient to you. You may, on a few occasions, be required to log on at the same time as other course members for "lessons", "conferences" or "chats" in the virtual classroom.

A real class of fellow students
In many distance courses, learners start and finish courses at any time of the year and join an infinite number of other distance learners at various stages of their course. Our courses have start and finish dates and a defined group of participants, just like our face-to-face courses. You will have tasks and deadlines to keep and be expected to maintain an appropriate rhythm (see above). In other words, flexibility is limited in order to maintain motivation.

Learning how to learn on-line
As well as learning about teaching and language you will have the opportunity to experience and reflect on the nature of on-line learning itself.

Ease of use
You will find it easy to use the virtual learning environment, even if you are relatively unfamiliar with this kind of learning and there will be plenty of support and guidance from tutors to deal with any queries and make sure you are on track.

We use “Moodle”, a “virtual learning environment” (VLE), which allows you to:

  • upload and download course information and material
  • access materials on and off-line
  • participate in live and non-synchronised discussions
  • send work to tutors and receive feedback
  • communicate with tutors and other members of the class individually and as a group
  • interact in ways similar to a real classroom with the advantage of being able to access it at times convenient to you

We use Skype/Messenger or telephone for personal tutorials.

You will need to have regular access to a computer with internet connection, but won’t need to spend huge amounts of time actually on line.

We recommend you install skype if you don't have it already to take advantage of cost-free calls to tutors. www.skype.com
